Current Book: Right now for work I'm re-reading several books on early modern Europe in order to write lectures. For fun I'm currently reading the last Harry Potter novel in Spanish (I needed to ease back in with that goal) and Eowyn Ivey's The Snow Child.
Current Drink: It's Monday morning so lots of coffee!
Current Excitement: The start of a new semester (which has actually been delayed due to icy conditions and campus being closed today) and the start of marathon training!
Current Fashion Trend: I am enjoying the hell out of colored pants. I added two new pairs scored from a Loft sale right before the start of the year. Also I 'm loving the mod, graphic, black and white prints that are in right now.
Current Favorite Blog/Website: These days I'm really loving Letters of Note.
Current Garden Item: I don't have a garden. I also have a black thumb and live in Alaska. I'm not sure it's in the cards.
Current Love: The return of Downton Abbey on PBS. I alternate between wanting to be Lady Mary and wanting to be Tom Branson.
Current Food: Right now I'm into all things potato even more than usual. Hashbrowns for breakfast? Potato & leek soup for dinner? Yes, please!
Current Indulgence: Mascara. For the first time in my life I spent almost $30 on a tube of it at Sephora instead of buying the cheap stuff at CVS.
Currently Pondering: A couple of home decor projects. We are planning a little shrine to our nieces, but we'd also like to buy some art to hang in the next few months. I'm also thinking I'd like to get a few trays and baskets to keep clutter under control a little better. For now I'm just excited to have a clean study.
Current Mood: Slightly manic. I got up, got ready for the first day of the semester, checked my email, and saw that campus has been closed due to icy conditions. I think we're also under a flood warning right now. My eternal internal child is thrilled at a school closing, but now I have to redo my syllabi and work on a book review.
Current New Find: This is not completely a new find as we've been using them for a couple of months, but Mark bought reusable parchment paper sheets a couple of months ago. Since we eat a lot of oven baked fries and roasted vegetables they come in very handy. They're not as easy to clean as I might like, but they're definitely better for the environment than regular parchment paper.
Current Outfit: After finding out that campus is closed, I changed out of the dress and blazer I was wearing and into running clothes. How about I show you a picture of my most recent date night outfit instead?
Current Peeve: Mis-representations of faculty life in the media. I've been feeling pretty pissed about recent articles in HuffPo, Forbes, etc. that drew on a CareerCast survey and suggested that professors live cushy lives, work few hours, have next to no deadlines, etc. As I've posted before, many of us work more than 40 hours a week and work during the summer when we don't even get paid.
Current Song: Ben Folds Five "Thank You for Breaking My Heart"and the new (holy shit) Bowie for sitting and feeling somber. Alicia Keys "Girl on Fire" for running.
Current Triumph: Getting a publication project cleared off my desk (at least for now) before the start of the semester! Woot!
Current Wish-List: I wish that I had lots and lots of airline vouchers, because it is freaking expensive to fly out of here - especially this time of year.
Currently Delaying: Any further attempts to adopt a second dog. Last week we did a trial run with a terrier mix who is currently in foster care. She was really cute, but she really didn't like Bailey and exhibited some troubling behaviors so we decided not to move forward with the adoption. I'm still feeling some guilt and sadness about it, but the overwhelming emotion, to be honest, is relief.
What are you currently reading? What's currently on your wish-list?

This is a fun post idea!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen we decided to adopt a second dog, it didn't work out with our first one either. I had met one at a rescue that I just adooooored, but when I brought him home it wasn't a good match with Bella. She's dominant by nature, and the rescue had told me that he was submissive to females, so we expected it to work out. Well, he was SO not submissive. We said going into the adoption process that it would ultimately be up to Bella, and when she made it clear that it wasn't going to work, after the trial run weekend we moved on. Harley was the next one we brought home, and it was love at first sight for the two of them. :) You'll find Bailey's match, and when it's right you'll know it! I'm currently fighting the urge to adopt a 3rd dog... only because I know my husband would positively murder me.
It's funny. The other dog this woman had was billed as dominant, so we decided we wouldn't even try that one since we knew it would be trouble. Supposedly the dog we did the trial one with did not have dominance issues and was billed as getting along well with other dogs. Her owner admitted, though, that she had been exhibiting more aggressive behaviors in the past couple of months, and it was clear that she did not like Bailey, and might not have ever even come to tolerate her. I have to say that Bailey behaved herself pretty commendably through it all and did us proud. Anyway, I'm in no rush to try this again in the immediate future, but hopefully some day the right dog comes along at the right time and we can adopt a second one.
DeleteMuahahaha--I am totally stealing this post idea. Fun stuff! Currently I am trying halfheartedly to read issues of The Chronicle, but I'm not making much progress there. I just finished reading a research article about flies and amino acid sensing, and now I have some good ideas for pilot experiments on my own work. And for fun, I'm reading Quiet by Susan Cain, which is fan-freaking-tastic.
ReplyDeleteOn my wishlist: new running shoes and new glasses. I'm debating with myself about whether to buy those things this month or next...
That is too bad that adoption didn't work out, but I am glad you went with your instincts. Try not to feel too guilty as it's tough to take on a pet that might have really clashed with Bailey...
ReplyDeleteI'm currently wishing I could hire a communications intern to answer emails for me and forward out updates on the latest in my relocation debacle. I have different levels of information to share with different people, and I can't send any personal emails at work as my email can be read, so that means it has to happen on personal time, and that is tough sometimes.
I am so happy that Downton Abbey is back.
ReplyDeleteLOVE Downton! Well, I'm a Britophile (is that a word?) so that comes as no surprise. I am pretty sure I am the Dowager Countess reincarnated. I'm currently reading Wheel of Time and then I mix in some Romance books now and then to clear my mind from too much thinking. I have some Ken Follett waiting for me too. As long as it isn't Jodi Picoult type stuff, I am usually interested in reading it. hee hee! Good idea about "Currently this month..." I should do something like that too :)
ReplyDeleteMaggie Smith is amazing in that role (and Anglophile is definitely a word even if Britophile is only an unrecognized one)!
DeleteI can't wait to hear more about the possible adoption of dog #2. Also, you are way cute in your date night outfit.
ReplyDeleteI *heart* the currently posts.
ReplyDeleteCurrently reading: Still plodding through Casanova's memoirs. If I finish that in 2013, I'll be a proud woman.
potato everything! I can hear that!
ReplyDeleteChic on the Cheap
I love your little shoe area next to the door! And the bookshelves. All my books are in boxes, as I am renting and have a roommate and don't want to bring all my books here (and frankly don't have the space)... but I miss my books! I am currently reading The Wednesday Sisters, which is pretty good so far! I am currently listening to a lot of rap (while running), including the Snoop Dogg station on Pandora, which has some great early 90s rap on it! It's bringing back the childhood memories!
