Monday - gym. I did 20 minutes of weight lifting followed by 25 minutes on the stair master. I may be the only one in the world who loves the stairclimber, but I do.
Tuesday - active rest. I got in 30 minutes of walking across campus.
Wednesday - gym and yoga. I did 20 minutes of weights and then 20 minutes on the elliptical at a moderate pace. Later in the evening I went with a couple of friends to a Yin class. It was my first time in the studio in a few weeks and my hips were definitely feeling it by the end of the class. I was exhausted by the end and even drifted off to sleep for a few minutes during savasana.
Thursday - active rest. I got in 30 minutes of walking to my class and back to my office.
Friday - 2.5 mile run. I met up with a friend who was running 42 miles this week to celebrate her birthday for a couple of birthday miles on the trail system near campus. I was really congested, and she very kindly kept to my pokey pace.

Sunday - rest. I was still feeling pretty crummy, so I spent the day on the couch, doing class prep, grading, and drinking hot tea.
I also received some bad news on Friday. The treadmill repair guy came to look at my treadmill, and it looks like the problem is not the speed sensor - which would be easy and cheap to fix, but rather a problem with the guts of the circuitry. If this is indeed the case, it may cost several hundred dollars to repair. Considering that the hours of daylight are shrinking and currently all surfaces outdoors right now are like an ice rink with a few inches of snow on top, we're debating the best course of action. For now, we're having the repair place order a new speed sensor, and we'll see if that ends up doing the trick.
Do you have a treadmill? Do you run outside when the conditions are icy?
I think the only answer is to take up skating! :-) Really, I think that yin yoga is an excellent stabilizer of your immune system as the light fades and the warmth leaves. Of course, all of your exercises are excellent for your health - but you might want to amp up the supported yoga until you feel a bit more generally well. Then you can bring back the more high-energy pursuits.
ReplyDeleteI've been crossing my fingers all fall as students cough and sneeze and sniffle all around me. So far, I've managed to avoid getting anything serious. . . .I'm impressed that you still manage to get some activity into almost every day. Kristin might have a point, though -- I'm really thinking I should switch to more yoga, less running for the next few weeks -- these are the weeks that often bring me down. . . Take care.
ReplyDeleteI hope you can kick this cold for good and get back to full health! When I lived in Minneapolis, I was a wimp about running on icy sidewalks, so I would do something else if the conditions were not good, like run on the treadmill or bike in my condo's gym.
ReplyDeleteLast week was a pretty weak week for me in terms of workouts. I did good at the beginning of the week, but then I traveled home for the weekend and did nothing and ate a lot... but I am determined to get back on track this week and have worked out the last 2 days.
Oof, I'm sorry to hear about your pesky cold. That is super annoying! I'm also sorry to hear about the treadmill. It sounds pretty essential to your Alaskan survival pack.
ReplyDeleteOn a different note: 42 miles in one weekend! That is very cool. I'm glad you got to share some of those miles with her--I'd love to do that for a friend! Happy birthday indeed.
Bummer about the treadmill! I have been using the treadmill because of the dark and it's nice to have the option, even though it's really not cold enough here not to run outside! I totally took it easy last week; I only ran twice! I have been having a bit of a cold as well and have just not been feeling it lately! I hope you feel better soon!
ReplyDeleteI do not have a treadmill and I avoid them like the plague. However, I live in an area that gets pretty cold, but is extremely arid. We hardly ever have icy conditions (just bitter cold). Therefore, I can run outside all year round with few exceptions. Things might be different for me if that were not the case...
ReplyDeleteI spend a lot of time on the treadmill in the winter. I'll go out in very cold weather, but once the ice hits the paths, I don't like to risk slipping and creating a serious injury (like we runners don't have enough injuries to worry about as it is!) ... I've come to terms of accepting the treadmill as part of the equation since I live in a region that gets all 4 seasons pretty severely.
